Tramadol – read this before using
Medications are definitely one of the most important aspects of modern day medicine as it’s really hard to find a health condition that doesn’t involve the use of a certain drug for treatment of it. Long gone are the days when most health problems involved surgery because now invasive measures are taken only in the most serious and urgent cases. Yet, with all the benefits of modern day medications there still some things that the user has to bear in mind in order to take the drug safely and effectively. And this is especially important when dealing with potent painkiller medications that are one of the most common class of drugs prescribed today.
Let’s take an example of such a widespread and popular painkiller as Tramadol, which is prescribed by doctors for management of various types of pain. This part makes part of a drug class called synthetic opioids. Opioids in general are derivatives of opiates – narcotic substances that are produced from poppy flower seeds and the active ingredients of such an infamous recreational drug as opium. Of course, the serious side effects were the main problem and this has forced pharmacists to develop synthetic derivatives of the potent narcotic that would be free of the negative side effects. While providing the same painkiller effects drugs like Tramadol do not depress the nervous system to a great extent, which eliminates the risk of such common opiate side effects as hallucinations, dementia, lack of concentration, dizziness, drowsiness, etc. However, these effects may still take place if the drug is being used with another agent that depresses the nervous system such as alcohol, recreational drugs, sedatives, antidepressants, anti-convulsion medications and medications for mental disorders. That’s why it is crucial to avoid mixing these substances with Tramadol. And in case you have to use them on a regular basis it is strongly recommended to consult with your doctor about the safety measures of taking painkillers during the treatment period.
Another important aspect of using potent painkillers is their slightly addictive nature. Because they affect the central nervous system these medications can cause an addiction to develop yet the risk is very low if you’re using the medication right. The addiction can manifest through withdrawal effects in case you stop taking the drug all of a sudden after a prolonged use. Instead the dosage should be gradually decreased. Still, there is a group of patients who should never take potent painkillers – persons with a history of substance abuse and/or dependency. Whether it was an alcohol addiction or recreational drug dependency people with a history of such issues are more prone to developing an addiction of any kind. And if they start using Tramadol it is very likely that a new addiction will develop very soon. So make sure to consult with your doctor regarding the possible use of any painkiller medications if you need proper pain relief but have a history of substance abuse.
